He would drink a draught from it, then hand it to whoever was in his presence, commanding them to take a sip from it and return it to him.
Abu al-Husayn 'Ali ibn al-Dakin said: I asked him one day about what he was chanting, and he replied: "It is a supplication regarding which I have a narration from my Sheikh Abu Muhammad 'Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Jannan, known as Al-Zahid al-Janbalani, who said: Yahya ibn Ma'in narrated to me, saying:
'I entered upon my Master Abu al-Hasan al-'Askari, Mighty is His Might, while our Master Abu Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) was with him. I asked him about the reality of Supplication: is it answered for the believer, or has it no [fixed] reality?'
He replied: 'The believer’s supplication is answered, and it has a reality that every believer must utilize.
