When it was the fourth day, he said to us: "I want to ask you about things; let the eldest of you in age, the widest in understanding, and the most abundant in science answer me. Which of you will be the answerer to my question and take charge of addressing me?" My master Abu 'Abd Allah said to him: "I shall answer what you ask about." He said: "Are you more worthy of that than this youth?" He said: "Yes." He asked: "Which of you finds the virtue in his companion?" I said: "I find the virtue in him over me." He asked: "The complete, perfect virtue in which there is no deficiency?" I said: "Yes." He asked: "Is this the one who bestowed upon you the permanent blessing whose delight does not vanish and whose joy does not perish?" I said to him: "Yes." He asked: "Is there a connector (muttaṣil) among you?" My master said to him: "Yes." He asked: "And what is it?" My master said: "The most magnificent of means, the most firm of them, the most complete, the most excellent, the strongest, the highest, and the most sublime." He asked: "What is it?" He said: "Faith (al-Īmān)." He said: "You have spoken eloquently, clarified, and reached [the point]. We have a great thirst to witness the likes of you, and Allah has blessed us with gathering with you." The Governor said to him: "Before I begin with anything I wish to mention, I want you to inform me: what trade did you two carry to these lands of ours?" My master said to him: "We carried no trade." He asked: "Do you have goods with you with which you seek anything we have?" My master said to him: "We have no goods with us with which we seek to buy anything from you." He asked: "Had you a trade that was lost or ruined?" My master said to him: "We had no trade that was lost." He asked: " Have you both come for a quest that you have known or heard of, or for a source that you have set out to reach?"
