him, the black of his eyes sank and the white appeared, and he began to speak words we did not understand. Then his senses went still, his moaning vanished, and his movement settled. The sheikh said: "Your brother's heart has just become sound and his intellect has become pure; his Lord manifested Himself to him, so he has fulfilled his vow. Bid him farewell if you wish." He said: We rose to him, contemplated him, and found that he had fulfilled his vow [died]. We said: "O righteous sheikh, how shall we act regarding his affair and his burial?" He said to us: "This is not for you, nor is its performance upon you. If you choose to attend his affair, the prayer over him, and his burial, then attend; and if you choose to return to your people, then return. These are the shrines of the friends of Allah, those upon whom there is no fear nor shall they grieve." He said: We said, "We accept to witness the prayer over him."

He entered a mountain pass of the valley and brought out a tambourine (duff), a bier, embalmment, and a shroud, and gathered what he needed. He brought out an inkwell and wrote a letter, folded it, wrapped it, sealed it, and tied it with a long string. Then he gestured to one of the beasts, which hastened to him. He tied the string to its neck, placed the letter on its face, and gestured to it to tread the path in the valley. The beast marched on that path, trotting and running in its gait. It was but a short moment until ten souls came to us, preceded by the man who had guided us to the valley. The sheikh rose and we rose when we saw them. We greeted them and they greeted us. Each of them began to embrace each of us and kiss the neck. Then they sat and consoled us regarding the Indian, and took charge of his washing and shrouding. When they shrouded him, they placed him upon the bier and carried him to a spot in the meadow. We saw a dug grave, so we descended to the edge of the grave and they sat waiting for a brother of theirs.

While they were thus, the beast that carried the letter approached, followed by a young man whose beard was complete, with a beautiful face, fine appearance, soft clothes, and pleasant scents. He was laughing of tooth, round of face, and joy and elation were manifest in his face.
