Does 'other-than-Him' possess a degree of manifestation that He lacks, such that it could be the one to make Him manifest?
Does He not possess the Precedence of the Two Existences? Just as He possesses the precedence of the two existences, so too is it fitting for Him to possess the Precedence of the Two Witnessings. And just as He is the First Existent, it is likewise fitting that He be the First Witnessed.
Furthermore, they ask: Is He closer to you, or is the evidence? If He is closer, then how can that which is further from you lead you to that which is nearer? Is it not a condition of evidence that it be clearer (ajla) than the object it proves, so that it may lead to it?
Due to His [absolute] manifestation and the [relative] hiddenness of the proven object, He is more worthy of serving as the evidence for Himself. What thing is more manifest than Him, Glorified be He? For He is the Manifest before the existence of any manifestations; rather, He is the Manifest One whose [brilliance] has caused the manifestation of all [other] manifestations to be obscured."
Then they [the People of Witnessing] ask: 'Is not your own existence independent of the need for evidence to prove it or a trace to lead to it?'
They [the People of Evidence] reply: 'Indeed, it is.'
