Thus, he who does not distinguish the Essence (al-Dhat) from the Attributes, and does not recognize the separation from the connection, the 'cleaving asunder' (al-fatq) from the 'joining' (al-ratq), and motion from stillness, has not reached the Shore of Monotheism (Tawhid) 1 .

From 'The Egyptian Treatise' (al-Risala al-Misriyya):

From the treatise The Path of Knowledge and Exposition, authored by Abu Abd Allah Muhammad bin al-Hasan al-Baghdadi (may God sanctify him), he says: He who describes Him does not limit Him, and he who knows Him does not lose Him. He manifests to His creation through the Lofty Essence, which is perceived and witnessed in the Unveiled Form (al-Surah al-Anza’iyya), through which He is distinguished from the populace; so that the path may become clear for those who acknowledge Him, and the Proof (al-Hujjah) may be established against those who deny Him.

Footnotes

1His saying: 'He who does not distinguish the Essence from the Attributes...': How could it be possible for one to distinguish Him from any of His creatures, considering Him the Lofty Secret and the Flowing Support (al-Madad al-Jari), and that He is none other than the Essence? Can one reach the Shore of Monotheism by saying: 'Everything that is in need of the Creator is not other than Him'? It is from the words of the Infallible: 'He is not within things by way of entry (walij), nor is He outside of them by way of exit.'Al-Imad al-Ghassani explains this sentence saying: It means He is not outside of them such that He would be missing, nor is He inside them such that He would be discarded.Up to his saying: The aspect of Monotheism is that we say: He is distinct from them in Eternity, Everlastingness, and Power, but not in Existence and Presence. He is present in them through Knowledge and Vision, not through intermingling or indwelling (hulul). From Imam al-Sadiq (may His might be exalted): 'Verily, God is in things through Knowledge, Power, and Encompassment, not in His Essence (Dhatan)'—Usul al-Kafi."
