And he knows the Hidden-Manifest (al-Khafiya al-Jaliya),

The radiant, illuminating Brand (al-Jidhwa).

An Olive Tree, wide and ample; neither Eastern

In the outward matter, nor Western.

The light of its oil appears illuminating.

He says: 'And he knows the Hidden': meaning, hidden from the understanding of the ignorant and straying, yet Manifest (Jaliya) to the rational and rightly-guided. Describing it as a 'Brand' (Jidhwa)—which is a flame or ember of fire—is an allusion to the fact that it is the very same 'Brand' which His faithful Interlocutor [Moses] sensed at the side of the Right Valley, when it called out to him: 'O Moses, indeed I am God, Lord of the Worlds.'

Then he returned to his written allusion by describing the 'Tree of Sinai' in the completion of the Verse of Light... etc.

Like a Star (Kawkab) witnessed by Abraham, Of which he said: 'This is my Generous Lord' 1 .

He says: 'The Star' is one of the three manifestations [shown] to the Friend (al-Khalil) Abraham—the Greatest Name—expressed as the 'Triple Manifestations' (al-Khilal al-Thulathiyya) within the Blessed, Sanctified Spot... etc.

Footnotes

1Refer to their definition of it as the Brand, the Star, the Fire, and the Tree; in those, they see the "Form".
