Slaves see Him only according to the measure of their knowledge of Him; and since the knowledge of God exists in varying degrees, so too is the vision of Him [varied].'"

[The vision of Him] varies; and whoever claims that his knowledge of God is equal to the knowledge of Muhammad has indeed fabricated a tremendous sin. When the knowledge of Him differs, the vision of Him differs accordingly; yet the Origin (al-Ibtida') is one and unchanging—'only those of understanding will take heed.'

From his discourse: 'Verily, all that the describers have described is but a creation from the creation of God. For God has attributed all things to Himself; yet He is other than them, and they are other than Him. His Actions are known through Him, but He is not known through His actions.' 1

Footnotes

1Therefore, the statement: 'The Essence cannot be pointed to except through its actions proceeding from it' is erroneous. Because His action is 'other than Him,' and He—Glorified and Exalted be He—cannot be pointed to through that which is other than Him.As al-Makzun [al-Sinjari] said: My poverty [need] for 'other than You' serves as a guide to them, But none points to You except You, O Guide to His own Guidance!
