Your Lord manifested to the letters and called them, and the first to respond was the Ya: at Your service, at Your service, O You to whom His attributes reach their end and the ultimate goal of all that goals are set upon. I saw myself small and my status lowly; so praise belongs to You through Him who is One, according to the effort of those who preceded and the ultimate intent of those who followed.

So his Lord called him: ‘By My Might and My Majesty, I shall surely make you a Gate to the Oneness of My knowledge, and I shall surely grant you a rank among the latter ones, just as you have a rank among the former ones.’ Then He inclined him from the first to the last, just as the Ya, who is the person of the Gate, is inclined. The Alif, which is its beginning, and he is Al-Miqdad, and He connected him to him. And when He made him worthy of it, He called him; and when the invoker desires to call out, as in his saying: ‘O Allah, O Most Merciful, O Most Compassionate’, with the Ya he begins, with the Name he ends, and to the Meaning he calls and supplicates, for the Ya is inclined and the Alif is the first of them.
