So began Al-Sadiq saying: O Mufaddal, these are from knowers’ indications, seekers’ communions and evidences of the Lord of worlds. Al-Mufaddal said: I said: my Lord, begin with clear proofs; he said: O Mufaddal, unveiling cannot encompass it; I said: my Lord, your sign appeared to knowers, yet Your limit eluded their sight. He said: O Mufaddal, indeed the Exalted One-Alone when appearing to his creation showed three Veils; from them: he veils his essence with light; veils his light with his radiance; and veils his radiance with his shadow. These veils are lights, not bodies nor mortals; and the Anza’iyyah form is the essence of radiance and shadow. It is that which has not changed throughout the ancient of ages nor in what occurs of ages and times; so his outer is Anza’iyyah form and his inner is Ma’nawiyyah; and the Greatest Name, which is the One, is invented from Essence’s light, which is his essence’s veil; which lights do not withstand when appearing, nor does light shine to its radiance when manifested; and the Essence nothing mixes with nor does delusion encompass it, nor does it shift nor cease from its time, forbidden unseen from anything perceiving it.
