For that reason he said: I and Ali like these two, indicating to the Gnostics that therein lies no separation; if between him and his creator was gap or intermediary, he would be another person, and this is the explicit disbelief; have you not heard the Exalted: they want to separate between Allah and his messengers, and His saying: they cut what Allah commanded to be joined; and it is forbidden to place between him and creator an intermediary; because he is names’ beginning. For that he said: I and Ali, as indication to knowers; so whoever knows the indication dispenses with the expression, and who knows the attribute’s locations reaches the ground of knowledge; have you not heard the Name’s indication to his Lord, explicitly not by allusion, when he says: where is the worry-remover from me; where is my distress-reliever; where my debt-payer; where my promise-fulfiller; then he reveals his outer name among creation, saying: where is Ali; so this is indication to his Lord, Goal, and Meaning; and His indication to his gate was: I am the knowledge-city and Ali is its gate, so whoever wants the city seek the gate.
