I said: "O my Master, by what name shall I call him?" He—may His Might be exalted—said to me: "Call him by his name with which Allah named him at the first degree of his disbelief: {And [remember] when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate before Adam'; so they prostrated, except for Iblis [Satan]. He refused} 1 .

And that is his first name in his ancient disbelief. "So I called out: 'O Iblis, answer my Master!' By Allah, I had not even reached the end of my words before there emerged to me, from that same room into which the goats' heads had rushed, a human figure as tall as a towering palm tree, blazing with fire and exhaling smoke. I was so bewildered by his igniting and flaring that I feared he would burn the house and everything within it. When he looked at my Master—may His Might be exalted—and [saw] the terror that had overtaken me because of him, [my Master] said to me: 'O Jabir, do not dread Iblis, for he has no power over you wherever you may be, [due to] the first Era (Kawr) I ordained for him at the start of his disbelief, denial, and opposition.' Then [my Master] said to him: 'Enough!' (Qattu), and that flame and blaze were extinguished, and he clung to the ground, descending, sinking, and vanishing."
