He—may His Might be exalted—said: "They are the forty who bore witness for Talhah and al-Zubayr on the Day of al-Hawab, so that their female companion fought and did not return them to Yathrib. All of that was out of pursuit and greed for the completion of what they hoped for and intended. But Allah was more predominant in authority, mightier in prowess, and loftier in empowerment. He annihilated them with a crushing annihilation and destroyed them with a vanishing destruction, as He did not repeat their [original] beginning. Instead, He placed them into the 'molds' (qawalib) of what you have slaughtered, and the beasts you ride—your donkeys and mules—and the various species of birds permitted for eating. They are eaten in their state just as they ate [others] at that time. It is regarding this that it was said: 'The Fire consumes itself,' and the Fire is Metempsychosis (al-Masukhiyya)."

I said: "O my Master, favor me with the knowledge of the names of the forty who bore false witness on the Day of al-Hawab, so that we may know them just as we knew the Companions of the Reptiles on the Night of the Mountain Pass."
