Through them, idols were worshipped and images were taken. These are the ones who distorted the Book of Allah, deviated from His path, and turned toward their Satan when he forbade for them the permissible and permitted for them the forbidden. These, O Jabir, are the Companions of the Mountain Pass (Aqaba) of the reptiles who plotted the scheme that was schemed; and the Companions of the Camel and the one led upon the Camel, who bore false witness on the Day of al-Hawab when the dogs barked, until their appointed time reached its fate. Thus, Allah let them taste the heat of His sword age after age and era after era. He lets them taste killing and slaughter in every age, equal to the number of breaths they took in pursuit of their worldly life and its pleasures while in human and physical form—during their enjoyment of food and drink, their audacity in denial and rejection, and their outward display of injustice and transgression. Allah lets them taste what He has let them taste, according to the count of those breaths that were spent in their state of luxury."

I said: "O my Master, as for the Companions of the Mountain Pass (Aqaba) of the reptiles, I and the group have known their names and their tribes—they are the ones whom the Messenger of Allah, may His Might be exalted, identified for Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman and his party, asking them to keep their names secret. But who are those who bore false witness on the Day of al-Hawab?"
