I moved toward it, and when it saw me approaching, it took refuge in one of the corners of the chamber, thrusting its head into it and turning its backside toward me, though it had been defiant when I first entered the room. And recoiling 1 , stretching its neck and shaking its ears, terrifying me by doing so. I grabbed it by the back of its neck and led it, and it followed with the utmost submissiveness. The blade was in my right hand and the ram was standing to my left, staring at the blade.
It was as Allah the Almighty said: {As if they were being driven to death while they were looking on} 2 . I brought it out into the courtyard of the house. When my Master saw me coming out with it in my hand, he—may His Might be exalted—said to me:
"Stay as you are, O Jabir, until your companions are complete." Then some of my brothers entered after me, and I was wondering how they could enter the chamber when there was nothing left in it; from where would they take a sheep like the one I took? But they remained only a little while before coming out, each with a ram in his hand just like the one I held. I said: "To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return! This is the most wondrous thing I have ever seen. Perhaps my gaze was so occupied by the terror of this ram in my hand that I did not see the others."
