I said: "O my Master, what is this day?"

He said: "O Abu Basir, this is a day of great decree and majestic status. The Arabs wasted it, while the Persians preserved it. It is the day of Nowruz."

I said: "What do You command me to do in it, O my Master?" He said: "I command you to perform Ghusl (ritual bathing) in it before the rising of the sun—whereas for the rest of the festivals, there is no harm in performing Ghusl at the rising of the sun.

And submerge your head in the water three times. In every submersion, say seven times: 'Say, He is Allah, [who is] One' [Surah Al-Ikhlas], or five [times], or three. Thus, you will be in the safety of Allah until a day like it. Shall I increase for you, O Abu Basir?"

I said: "Yes, O my Master."

He said: "Any man who gives to his believing brother a sound Dirham, not chipped 1 (Mathlum), Allah the Almighty compensates him with seven hundred Dirhams."

I remained silent.

Footnotes

1Thulma: A defect/gap in a wall or other things. A thing is thulima (chipped/breached), it is mathlum. It also implies intensity or abundance [in other contexts, but here means defective].
