When the night that is like it arrives, I secure them [the accounts] until they have received their wages in full.' I looked, and behold, every scroll bore the name of its owner , individually. I said to myself: 'In how long will my Master distribute these scrolls to this vast creation?'
He said: 'O Salman, it is not as your thoughts lead you to believe; extend your gaze.' I extended my gaze, and suddenly al-Baqi' had expanded to a vastness I had never known before! I said: 'This is a marvel; how quickly has al-Baqi' expanded to this great expanse?'
He said: 'O Salman, contemplate al-Baqi'.' I contemplated it and saw in it a great, flowing river. I said: 'O my Master, when did this river and flowing water exist in al-Baqi'?'
He said: 'O Salman, this is the Euphrates, and this is the land of Karbala, from the Tufuf (plains) to Kufa. In it occurs what you see on every night like this night, until Allah uncovers the leg (reveals the Truth). Blessed is he who attends to Us on a night like this, willingly and not under compulsion, knowing its nature and affirming its virtue. O Salman, if the Gnostic servant who attends this spot on a night like this were to be joined by the angels and all of creation—from humankind and jinn—and if the seas were their ink, and the trees their pens, and their leaves their pages, they would not be able to record the full merit of what is given to the one who is Gnostic of it, who keeps vigil (tahajjud) therein.
