Upon him [Ramadan], in that month, is its rectification (Taqwim) and the descent of the Spirit therein at his hands On the Night of Clarification (Laylat al-Bayan), [he determines] what has been and what he willed to be in his upcoming year. Allah strengthens those who remained steadfast in the Truth and saves them by His power and will; that is the ultimate triumph and the [divine] arrival For this reason, He enjoined upon His servants silence (al-Samt) in that month specifically, as an act of honoring, glorifying, magnifying, venerating, and awe for him. Whosoever remains silent and vigilant, Allah decrees for them His satisfaction.

Whosoever preserves its sanctity, his work is accepted and he remains firm in his Gnosis (Ma‘rifah). But whosoever is negligent and abandons silence therein, his fast is not accepted, nor is it taken from him; he holds no station before Allah if he merely torments himself with hunger and thirst. He has no [true] fasting; the abandonment of food and drink was only ordained so that the faster may be distinguished from the non-faster, just as bowing, prostration, and standing for prayer were made according to what is seen, for prayer is not known except through them. Likewise, the faster and the non-faster are only known [externally] by abandoning food and drink, but through silence, the people of Knowledge and Understanding are known. And with Allah lies all success."
