Whoever maintains silence (Samat) therein, protects it, and preserves its sanctity, his work is accepted, his effort is purified, and his reward is fulfilled. But whoever squanders his silence, his fasting is lost, his work is forfeited, and his fasting is not accepted. Verily, silence is coupled with fasting and is not complete except by preserving its sanctity; for its sanctity is great and its significance is majestic. Fasting within silence is great; for when the heart is silent through the reality of Gnosis (Haqiqat al-Ma‘rifa), all the limbs fast, the souls are reassured against the base source, one’s word glows, one’s proof is enlightened, and one’s light is kindled. At that moment, he becomes a faster by day and a qaim (one who stands in prayer/service) by night; he has known, felt secure, responded to what he was called to, and acted upon what he was commanded. Thus, he becomes among those of whom Allah said: {Those are the ones Allah has guided, and those are the people of understanding} 1 .

Then he—may His Might be exalted—said: "Ramadan is the Light of Splendor (Nur al-Baha’), the Radiance of Grandeur (Sana’ al-Kibriya’), the Illumination of the Kingdom (Diya’ al-Malakut), the Ray of the Veil (Shu‘a‘ al-Hijab), the Light of the Holy Spirit, and the Lamps of the Divine Creation (Takwin al-Lahutiyyah), both secretly and openly.
