I said to someone in the house: (Give me the note from under the pillow). She went to bring it to me but did not find it. I rose myself and sought it, but I found no news nor trace of it. This is what happened in the story.'

He said: 'All of this is good. Now I would love for you to ask him what I asked you 1 .' I said: 'I shall do so.' And I departed. He mounted me upon a riding animal worth one hundred dinars, with a saddle worth the like. He bestowed a robe upon me and loaded what he had prepared with me. I came with my entire situation until I entered upon my Master. He said to me: 'O Ibn Ayyub, We have rewarded him for the first [action], because We commanded him with fifty thousand dinars. And We shall reward him for what proceeded from him without request with one hundred thousand dinars, and a second one hundred thousand dinars, and a third one hundred thousand dinars. Likewise do I reward him who gives a brother of his brothers something with ten times its like if he gave it [upon request]. But if he initiated it without a request, We reward him with sixty-fold [compared to] a request, so that the giver may desire to initiate before the asking. And where is that, O Ibn Ayyub? Inform him [of the spiritual truth]. For he has deserved, by his bounty to you and his deed toward you, to know Him—to know God.
