That is because when I brought to you what I brought yesterday, I rode to the Diwan (Bureau). A man was handed over to me for me to audit him. I audited him, and it turned out he owed three hundred thousand dinars.
He said to me: 'Would you be willing to deduct half of that from me, and I shall bring you fifty thousand dinars?' I said: 'Bring it.'
I did not perform the Noon prayer (Dhuhr) until I had secured it [the money] in my chests and under my seals and locks. I deducted from him half of what he owed, and I submitted his account with what remained against him, while I was fearful that the account might be returned to someone else [for re-auditing]. But it was not returned to me, nor was I questioned with a single word. Thus, the reward for the five thousand dinars was fifty thousand dinars—so nothing delayed it! I have known that and became certain of it. So, what is it that you desire?'
I said: 'I wish to ask you to inform me of the news of my note reaching you, and who was the one who delivered it?'
He said: 'Do you desire that?'
I said: 'Yes, for I have been in bewilderment since that time; because I will inform you [of my side] if you inform me.'
