"And I enjoin upon you the like of that instruction, and I encourage you with the like of that encouragement. So eat from these fresh dates."
So I ate and gathered the pits (Ajam) with me. When I wanted to depart, he scooped a single scoop with his right palm, then said: "Take [this], O Ali ibn Ahmad, and distribute it among those of your believing brothers who are present with you. And when you have distributed it among them, return to me; I will inform you."
Al-Husayn ibn Hamdan said: Ali ibn Ahmad said to me: So I stood up, overflowing with joy, and the fresh dates which my Master handed to me were in the edge of my cloak, and the pits of what I had eaten were gathered, my hand closed over them. When I distanced myself from him, I counted the pits that were in my hand, and behold, they were thirty-four pits.
So I said: "Indeed, this is a wonder! I ate with my Master Abu al-Hasan in the past year in which he drew me near and brought me close to his seat, and enjoined upon me, and made known to me the merit of this day and its inner meaning (Batin), and singled me out with its knowledge, and fed me, and I ate?" seventeen fresh dates, and he handed me the like of what I had eaten. So I distributed it among those present from the people of Tarabay, and nothing remained over from them, nor was there any increase among them, not even a pit."
