We have narrated from al-Mufaddal ibn 'Umar, peace be from him, that he said: My Master al-Sadiq, may His Might be exalted, said: In the time of the Persians, al-Ma‘na (The Meaning), may His Might be exalted, used to manifest twice every year: at the passing of the cold into heat, and at the passing of the heat into cold.
The passing of the cold into heat was named Nowruz, and the passing of the heat into cold was named Mehregan, and they took them as two festivals for themselves. At that time, when the Greatest Meaning (al-Ma‘na al-Akbar) manifested in the cycles (al-Akwar), He manifested with the Crown (al-Iklil); and it was said [to celebrate] by eating and drinking on these two days. Al-Mufaddal, peace be from him, said: {Only those of understanding will pay heed} 1 .
