In another narration—from which we have summarized the relevant part—the narrator said: Quraysh gathered to kill the Messenger of Allah (Mighty is His Glory), saying: "No one supports him today, for his uncle Abu Talib has died." They collectively agreed to bring a robust youth from every sect and tribe, so they would surround him and strike him with their swords as one man; thus, Banu Hashim would not have the strength to oppose all of Quraysh.

When this reached the Messenger of Allah (Mighty is His Glory), and he learned that they had conspired to come on the night they had appointed, the Messenger of Allah (Mighty is His Glory) set out as the darkness mingled, accompanied by Abu Bakr. He left Ali behind in his bed to return the trusts that were in his possession and proceeded to the cave to hide within it. Quraysh arrived and found Ali, and they said to him: "Where is your cousin?" He replied: "You told him to leave you, so he left." They searched for his tracks but could find no trace of him, as Allah blinded their vision, veiled him from them, and obscured the location from them. They stood at the entrance of the cave, where a pigeon had nested, and said: "There is no one in the cave." So they departed, and the Messenger of Allah (Mighty is His Glory) emerged.
