Meanwhile, Khadija stood at the side of the house, weeping for the Messenger of Allah—may His glory be exalted—and for the Commander of the Faithful—may His glory be exalted—as he lay upon the bed of the Messenger of Allah to protect him with his own soul.
The polytheists arrived at the house by night; they scaled the walls, entered, and aimed for the Messenger's bed. They found the Commander of the Faithful—may His glory be exalted—lying in it. They struck out at him with their hands and said: "O son of Abu Kabsha! Your magic, your soothsaying, and the service of the Jinn shall not benefit you today; today we shall quench our weapons with your blood!" Then the Commander of the Faithful—may His glory be exalted—rose to repel them, yet it was as if they could not reach him. He sat up in the bed and said: "What is the matter with you, O polytheists of Quraysh? I am 'Ali ibn Abi Talib." They said to him: "And where has Muhammad, your cousin, gone, O 'Ali?"
He replied: "To wherever Allah wills." They asked: "Who else is in the house?" He said: "There is no one in it but Khadija." They said: "The noble, well-born, and generous [lady]—were it not for her marriage to Muhammad! O 'Ali, by al-Lat and al-'Uzza, were it not for the sanctity of your father and his great position among Quraysh, we would have put our swords to you!"
