Jabir said: "Tell me, may my father and mother be your ransom, for I heard it [alluded to] from your grandfather, the Messenger of Allah—may His glory be exalted—when he fled from the polytheists of Quraysh to the Cave, at the time they raided his house by night to kill him, saying: 'Aim for his bed so that we may kill him in it.'"

Then the Messenger of Allah—may His glory be exalted—said to our Master, the Commander of the Faithful—may His glory be exalted: "O my brother, indeed the polytheists of Quraysh are raiding me this night and aiming for my bed; so what will you do, O ‘Ali?"

The Commander of the Faithful—may His glory be exalted—said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, I shall lie down in your bed, and Khadija shall stay in a place at the side of the house. Go forth, and take Allah as your companion to where you feel secure." The Messenger of Allah said to him: "May I be your ransom, O Abu al-Hasan! I shall go to my she-camel, al-Adba', mount her, and go forth unto Allah, fleeing from the polytheists of Quraysh. Do with yourself as you wish, and Allah is my successor (Khalifati) over you 1 and over Khadija."

Footnotes

1Here the Messenger of Allah speaks with the tongue of "Circumspection" (al-Mudara); likewise, the Commander of the Faithful in the same report speaks with the polytheists about Allah as if He is the Vanquisher.
