The Prayer of the Day of Mubahala

In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

O my Master, the intellects have sought testimony through all things for Your ancient pre-eternity, and through the marks of incapacity You have placed upon them for Your Power, and through the annihilation 1 You have compelled them toward for Your Permanence. No place is devoid of You such that You would be perceived through "whereness" (ayniyya), nor does Your attribute have a phantom such that You would be described through "quality" (kayfiyya). You were not absent when You were inward (batunta) such that You would be known through "spatiality" (haythiyya). You have differed from all that You originated in attributes, and You are unique in the ultimate reality of Essence (al-Dhat). Dwellings did not encompass You in Your greatness such that You would inhabit [them], nor did places lack Your subtlety such that You would depart [from them] 2 . O One, not of a number; O Eternal of Sovereignty and Eternity.

Footnotes

1In another manuscript: "(And through that which satisfied You as a conviction of Your permanence)." Perhaps the meaning is that the modes of Epiphany (al-Tajalli) are six, including Epiphany by the thing or Manifestation by the thing. Epiphany by the thing occurs through the name "the Intellect"; so the meaning is: when He manifested through the Name, [the intellect] became convinced and reassured of His permanence and pre-eternity—that He is the Ancient Who does not change in manifestation or inwardness; rather, change occurs only to the originated beings in their perception.
2Jalla regarding a place: he left it or turned away from it. Jalla from his land: he left it. He Jalla from the lands of foreigners when he found no comfort in them.
