Then He said: {[Who] made the angels messengers having wings, in twos, threes, and fours} 1 ; He means by His saying "{the angels}": the People of the Ranks (Ahl al-Maratib) who possess the knowledge of Allah according to what each rank was entrusted with.

As for the "{wings}": they are what Allah granted to the people of each rank from His Epiphanies, according to the number of the categories of His Manifestations; and He increases in His creation—Exalted is His Station—from His Epiphanies whatever He wills, for Allah is powerful over all things. And the "Fourfold" (Ruba') 2 did not reach completion except in my grandfather, the Messenger of Allah—upon his mention be peace—for Allah manifested him in this dome of yours in the rank of the Yatimiyya (Uniqueness) by what he deserved before it, and He manifested to him according to it. Then He raised him from it to the Spirituality (al-Ruhaniyya) and manifested to him from it according to his state within it. Then He veiled him as a Messenger and manifested to him from the rank of the Message (al-Risala) according to it.

Footnotes

1Surah Fatir - Verse 1.
2The number four—four Epiphanies {having wings in twos, threes, and fours}; or "al-Ruba'": the condition, the matter, and the affair. It is said: "They are upon their Ruba'", meaning upon their good condition they were once in. Ruba' is a numerical adverb derived from "four four" by repetition; it is said: "The people came in Ruba'," meaning four by four.
