Suddenly, they were two black men in shackles; in the arm of each of them was an iron [rod] that entered their brains and exited from their rears. Our Master al-Husayn—may His Might be exalted—then said: "O Gabriel, who are these two?"
He said: "These two are Umar ibn Sa'd and Mu'awiyah—may Allah curse them." Then he said to them: "Draw near to me," and they drew near to him. He said: "How have you found the punishment of Allah and His vengeance within your metamorphosis (Masukhiyyatikuma)?"
They said: "O our Master, [we found it] the severest of torment and exemplary punishment. So, take us out from the metamorphosed bodies (Abdan al-Masukhiyyah) into human bodies (Abdan al-Bashariyyah); for we have indeed recognized the Truth, O our Master, and the path has become clear to us. So have mercy on us, O Most Merciful of the merciful, and bestow Your favor upon us." He said: "May Allah not have mercy on you! This is for you throughout the cycling (Tardad) for a thousand years of this metamorphosis, from one mold (Qalib) after another; Allah's punishment and exemplary torment shall be renewed upon you as a recompense for what you have earned." Then they said: "Pardon from You! So forgive us our sins."
He said: "May Allah not forgive you, and may Allah not pardon you! Indeed, Allah said: 'My mercy and My pardon are for My chosen ones among the believers, and My vengeance is upon My oppressive enemies.'" Then he let out a shout at them, and they sank into the earth.
