[36] It is narrated from Ali ibn Muhammad al-Barqi, from al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn, from Ibrahim ibn 'Isa al-Hashimi, from his father, who said: I heard al-Waffad, as he once passed by, speaking about in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah—may His Might be exalted—saying: "Indeed, the donkeys and beasts used to speak during the era of the Children of Israel, to the extent that a man would be traveling upon his donkey or beast, and it would speak to him from beneath him, saying: 'O so-and-so, son of so-and-so, do you not have mercy on me in my current state? Is it not enough for you [what I endure] that you must toil me with this exhaustion, when I am your father, or your brother, or one of your relatives, or your family?' This is made clear in the Quran where Allah the Almighty said: {And [He created] the horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride and [as] adornment; and He creates what you do not know} 1 . Allah—Mighty and Majestic—intended that you ride them while you do not [truly] know them."
And the words of the Almighty: {And We ordained for them therein: that the soul is for the soul, the eye for the eye, the nose for the nose, the ear for the ear, the tooth for the tooth, and for wounds is legal retribution} 2 .
