This is evidenced by the words of the Almighty: {The criminals will be known by their marks, so they will be seized by the forelocks and the feet} 1 , and the words of the Almighty: {Be not deceived by the [uninhibited] movement of the disbelievers throughout the land. [It is but] a small enjoyment; then their ultimate residence is Hell, and wretched is the resting place} 2 . He says: O believers, do not find enjoyment in what they have enjoyed in this worldly life; indeed, their duration is but brief, then they are transferred to that which is the greatest temple of Hell—and wretched is the resting place for whoever traverses it.

[29] And on the authority of 'Ali ibn Ahmad al-Barqi, by his chain of transmission from al-Mufaddal ibn 'Umar—peace be upon him—who said: The Knower (al-'Alim)—exalted is His might—used to say when he saw a Bactrian camel (al-Jamal al-Bakhati) 3 : "No welcome to you! Have you found what your Lord promised you to be true?" And he would say: "These are the A'raf, O Mufaddal. Do you know what they have done? And why were they named A'raf?" I said: "No, by God, my Master." He said: "Because these have recognized me in this place where they are, rather at this very hour, and in what they shall become and what they are transferred into and through."
