God—the Mighty and Majestic—has two punishments in the World: one is for the soul, which is its transfer into metamorphosis (al-Masukhiyya), and the other is the setting of some of them against others as a vengeance. That is [the meaning of] His—the Almighty’s—words: {And thus will We make some of the wrongdoers allies of others for what they used to earn} 1 of sins.

Whatever he experiences of ailment, poverty, and the like is made a punishment for the believer in the World, and a vengeance for the disbeliever in the World and an evil torment in the Hereafter. The torment of the disbeliever in the Hereafter occurs only because of a sin, and sin arises from desire. Whatever [sin] comes from the believer is an error and forgetfulness 2 , while whatever comes from the disbeliever is vengeance, denial, transgression, and envy. That is [the meaning of] His—the Almighty’s—words: {[Out of] envy from themselves [even] after the truth has become clear to them} 3 .

It has been narrated on the authority of our Masters, the People of the House (Ahl al-Bayt)—exalted is Their might—that within that [animal] whose flesh and fat are permitted, there are ten prohibited parts; and within that [animal] whose flesh and fat are prohibited, there are ten permitted parts. The permitted ones belong to Transcription (al-Naskh), while the prohibited ones belong to Metamorphosis (al-Maskh).
