As for his form, it consists of two forms: a form of Light and a form of Fire, and his movement within them is by the Spirit. That which moves by the Light is his right, and that which moves by the Fire is his left. That is [the meaning of] His—the Almighty’s—words: {So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record!"} 1 , and His words: {But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record} 2 , until His words: {Gone from me is my authority} 3 . The "Record" (al-Kitab) is the term (Ajal) of the believer and the term of the disbeliever.
Death is a mercy from God upon His believing servant, and a vengeance for the disbelieving enemy of God. This is because when God—the Mighty and Majestic—wills to bring His believing servant out of the World (al-Dunya) and into the Hereafter (al-Akhira), He has shown him mercy and pardoned him; He brings him out of his clay, calls him to His mercy, and returns him to His light. For the World is the prison of the believer and the paradise of the disbeliever. When He wills to cause the disbeliever to die, his soul departs in anguish, his form is destroyed, he is expelled from his paradise, and his soul is returned to the Fire.
