Once his speech becomes eloquent and his intellect strengthens, his knowledge of that diminishes and he gradually forgets it until what he once knew becomes obscured from him; thus, he does not articulate any of it nor does he remember it. He becomes fearful of entering into the punishment that may befall him, so he acts according to his own disposition until his knowledge and purity are complete. Then, he returns to the state of luminosity we previously mentioned, through the bounty of his Master upon him. This is the state of the knowing believer in his response.
As for the denier and disbeliever: when he has fulfilled his term in the mold (Qalib) in which he resides, his soul is seized and transferred into a fetus in its mother's womb, according to what we have described and previously mentioned. He is transferred in a state of being cheated, forsaken, and tormented, until he moves within the constriction of soul, inversion, and darkness, as if he is passing through the eye of a needle. His sorrow and contemplation grow long, and in his transition, he sees all that he gained from his denial, repudiation, and disbelief from the Day of Shadows (Yawm al-Azilla) until that time. His grief and weeping over himself endure, and he wishes the earth would swallow him or that he would become dust. His nourishment consists of the foulest things within the belly—meaning the belly of his mother—and his drink is from her fluids. He is struck by terror, diseases, and pains until he merits exit from it in seven or nine months.
