He said: As for the layer (al-Tabaq) from which Adam—exalted is His might—was created, he was created from Light and Fire 1 .

Then He created the Water and veiled the Wind with it; then He created the Clay from the foam of the two seas and veiled the Water with it.

From this, Adam was created. The inner meaning (Batin) of this is that the Light is that from which the Angels were created in [various] forms; the Fire is that from which the Jann were created in forms; and the Wind is that from which the Jinn were created in forms.

The Clay is the form of Adam. Thus, He created Adam from the Religion, the Fire, the Wind, and the Water, and that is of the affair of the World (al-Dunya); and He created within him the Light and the Spirit (al-Ruh) from the affair of the Hereafter.

Footnotes

1In another manuscript: "God created and segmented the segments and shaped the forms. He created the Light, then created the Fire and veiled the Light with the Fire. Then He created the Wind, and created the Clay from the foam of the sea, veiling the Water with it. Know that the Light is that from which the formed Angels were created."
