Then He said: "O Muhammad ibn Sinan, he transfers after he disbelieves, rebels, and denies; so he transfers into a camel and into what is lesser than it, until no type of the metamorphosed forms (al-Masukhiyyat) remains but that he is transferred into it. Then he is transferred into cotton and flax; thus he is spun, becomes thread (Khayt), and enters through the eye of a needle."

[7] And the Knower (al-'Alim)—exalted is His might—was asked about the plants of the earth, the stones, and the iron: are they without essence (Dhat) or soul (Nafs)? He said: "There is nothing but that it has a soul that knows toward what it transfers and what it attains; and [knowledge] reaches it while it is non-speaking and non-moving. As for the speaking and the moving, whoever among them is in metamorphosis (al-Masukhiyya), its speech is tethered (Arat) 1 so its correctness is manifest. This is for the People of Unveiling (Ashab al-Kashf), like the Gates (al-Abwab) and the making of beasts to speak; and it was narrated that in the time of the Children of Israel, beasts used to articulate and speak with the children of Adam."

Indeed, He is too Majestic to create the worms among these animals in vain, and to punish them with this torment without them deserving it.

Footnotes

1The beast was tethered (Arat) to its hitching post and its enclosure; it remained there. The Ariyy: the hitching place of the beast.
