[47] It is narrated from the Master al-Sadiq—may His Might be exalted—that he said regarding that which passes away and its meat is eaten: "Lawful for you is that which emerged from you [from your ranks/kind] but was created from your disobedience and [from] those who disbelieved. Once you know that they are your enemies and have settled into this degree [of metamorphosis], then it is lawful (Halal) for you; you may eat it, drink [its milk], kill it, and ride it, and you seek nearness to Allah through its punishment and its slaughter.

As for what was before you in the first era, it is forbidden for you." Then he recited this verse: {And no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another} 1 . "In this manner, the designation of lawful and forbidden occurs." He [the narrator] said: I said: "Explain that to me; what is it that was forbidden?"

Abu Abd Allah—may His Might be exalted—said: "Do you not see the wild beasts, the fish, the birds, and the creatures of the sea and land whose meat is not accepted [to be eaten]? These have been emancipated ('Utiqū); they wished to be an offering (Qurban) to Allah, but the innovator (al-Muhdith) is seized for his sin as an act of justice from Allah—Mighty and Majestic."

And the words of the Almighty: {Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims} 2 .
