So look, O soul, toward these testaments and contemplate them, that you may attain salvation in the Abode of Permanence and the Place of Light and Purity, alongside the noble masters and the righteous prophets.
O soul: Take from things that which you have recognized and which everyone recognizes, and leave that which you have rejected and which everyone rejects. You and the multitude have recognized that fire is hot, burning, and consuming; that water is cold, moist, and fluid, quenching thirst; you have recognized that the whole is greater than its part and that the straight is other than the crooked. You have recognized that Blessedness (Tuba) is the noble, sublime Truth, while Woe (Wayl) is the base, mean portion. You have learned that the object of desire is beloved to the desirer, and the object of renunciation is detested. If parting with a beloved is an evil and a calamity, while parting with a detested thing is a good and a blessing—and if this world is truly and undoubtedly destined to be parted with—then Woe is mandated for those who love it, and Blessedness for those who detest it.
