Admonition to the Soul - Hermes Trismegistus

It is like the knight: it is he who should manage the horse, directing and training it, not the horse that should manage the knight. And it is like the Sultan: it is he who must be the manager and governor of the subjects, not the subjects who manage and govern him. When these things proceed according to their natural state, Truth and Justice appear in all their beauty and fairness; but if they are reversed into their opposites, then Evil and Injustice appear in all their ugliness and malice.

O soul: If the body lives through the soul, and through it sees, hears, smells, tastes, and touches, then it has become a necessary certainty that the body is the soul's tool. It is a foul thing for the tool to manage the artisan and enslave him, for it is the artisan who manages the tool. If an ignorant man takes a tool and busies himself with nurturing, decorating, and pampering it instead of using it to work and acquire—and the tool then compels him to worship it—at that moment, Truth turns into Falsehood, Justice into Injustice, and Beauty into a repulsive ugliness. For then the living, seeing, hearing, rational, and noble being becomes a slave to that which is dead, blind, deaf, ignorant, and vile.

O soul: Indeed, a time in which the subjects manage the Sultan is an inverted time, and destruction is mandated for all. If the horse were to manage the knight, then the destruction of both is mandated. Likewise, if the body manages the soul, the destruction of both is mandated.

O soul: Management (Siyasa) is a trait that is not inherently fit for any creature; rather, it is a trial by which people are tested.
