O soul: If a blind man walks and falls into a pit, he is excused by himself and by others. But as for the one who sees, if he approaches a pit while seeing it, yet throws himself into it out of passion and desire, what excuse remains for him, either before himself or before others?
O soul: How immense is the regret of one who falls into a hateful state despite having knowledge and insight! How intense is his torment! The meaning of the intensity of his torment lies in his very knowledge, recognition, and awareness of what he has done to himself. Therefore, O soul, take these testaments and act upon them; thus you shall be granted success in happiness and achieve salvation.
O soul: Indeed, he who abstains from the desires of this world, the world abstains from him, and he departs from it sound and victorious—his victory being his proximity to God. But he who hastens toward the desires of this world, the calamities of the world hasten toward him, and he departs from it ailing and losing—his loss being his distance from God.
