If it were not so, then the tree of Goodness would yield evil, and the tree of Evil would yield good. If such were the case—that a tree yields other than what is in its nature—then the planter of the vine should harvest acorns from it, and the planter of the oak should harvest grapes from it. Yet, we do not see a tree yielding other than what is in its nature, for the vine yields nothing but grapes, and the oak yields nothing but acorns. How then, O soul, could the planter of the tree of Goodness harvest other than Goodness, or the planter of the tree of Evil harvest other than Evil?
It has become necessarily clear and manifest, both through sense and intellect, that a thing neither gives birth to nor yields anything except its own kind and form.
Otherwise, have you ever seen a donkey produce a human, or a human produce a horse?
Since these meanings have become clear to you, O soul, then seek knowledge of the realities of things. Do good and plant its tree, so that your vision may be cleared, and you may harvest action from your knowledge, goodness from your good deeds, and insight, light, and guidance from your discernment. Thus, you shall be clothed in the Supreme Station and attain the lasting, eternal, and prevailing happiness.
