O soul: Let not the intensity and excess of your caution lead you to the limit of cowardice, whereby you lose courage and its nobility and acquire baseness and its vileness. Know that everything that draws sustenance [from another] is not "Self-Subsistent" (Ghayr Dhat).

If it is not self-subsistent, then it is in need of matter (sustenance). Everything that is in need of matter finds that its matter must continuously support it throughout the duration of its existence. Be certain of this, O soul, for within this realization lies great rest and immense benefit 1 .

O soul: Adhere to particular management according to what is possible; but if matters push you toward the realms of Universal Management, then be content with that and find tranquility in it. Know that by doing so, the heavy burden of anxiety and imposition falls away from you—much like a man who burdened himself with a lamp to seek light throughout the long, dark night, but when the sun rose, he no longer needed the lamp, and the weight of that imposition vanished.

O soul: Do not draw near to the vile and base aspects of matters, lest habit binds you to them and you take on a nature contrary to your own; for by sinking into them, you would lose [the path of] returning to your homeland. Know that the Creator of all things—Exalted and High is He—is the most noble of all things.

1On the Dependency of Matter: This is what modern physics—specifically quantum mechanics, the principle of quantum superposition, and Schrödinger's theories—alludes to. If we philosophize the results reached by scientists regarding the "Uncertainty Principle" in the existence of matter and its need for external forces or observers for the certainty of its existence, we find the profound truth of this statement.
