But he who fights with his weapon, protects himself, and does not surrender to his enemy is destined for "slaughter" (sacrifice). Every soul that descends to the realm of nature must inevitably tread one of these two paths:

Either slaughter or captivity. Whoever chooses captivity has chosen prolonged torment, the degradation of labor, and the humiliation of servitude.

And whoever chooses "slaughter" (sacrifice) dies with dignity, and his death becomes life for him; he is thus relieved from captivity, its degradation, and its prolonged humiliation 1 .

O soul: Whenever you intend to abandon base and vile actions, seek out their fountainhead and avoid it—which is the love of the world. And whenever you intend to perform noble and divine actions, seek out their root, plant it, and nurture it—which is asceticism (Zuhd) regarding the world. Let the performance of this be free from hypocrisy and camouflage.

Footnotes

1On Death as Life: It is mentioned in Kitab al-Sirat by Mufaddal ibn Umar—peace be upon him—that the Master al-Sadiq (Imam Jafar)—may his glory be exalted—said: "Likewise, if a believer imparts the Word of Sincerity (Ikhlas) to a man, he 'slays' him with the knowledge of it." God Almighty said: “Turn to your Creator and slay yourselves.” For the slaying of a believer through the knowledge of his Creator is eternal life for him. The Great Master Muhammad—peace be upon him—said: "Death is rest; and many a dead one has found rest." Moreover, "Death" is one of the names of the Lord, according to His saying: “And you used to long for death before you met it; now you have seen it while you look on.” This, O Mufaddal, was an allusion to your Master, the Prince of the Believers (Ali)—may his glory be exalted—for He is for every beholder an observed and witnessed reality; He is [identified] by this attribute.
