Be certain, O soul, of all that I have expounded to you, and comprehend it.
And know, O soul, that the destructive matters are of three genera: the first is "Polytheism (Shirk) and all its types," "Injustice (Zulm) and all its types," and "Sensual Pleasure (Taladhudh) and all its types."
All these genera and their various types are gathered under a single root, which is the "Love of the World" 1 . Therefore, beware, O soul, of the world and turn away from it; look upon it with the eye of one who is fearful and apprehensive of it. Be within it like a bird that has recognized the set trap, understood its danger, and thus veered away from it in caution.
Know, O soul, that your caution and flight from the genus of polytheism (Shirk) lead you to the station of Monotheism (Tawhid). Your caution against the genus of injustice leads you to the rank of Light, Purity, Refinement, and Sincerity. And your caution against the genus of sensual pleasure relieves you from enduring fear, grief, ignorance, and poverty. So, grasp, O soul, the reality of these meanings and know them, so that you may be saved and delivered from destruction.
