{Or have their hands and feet cut off from opposite sides} means they are to be barred from the inner sciences and left to surge within their own whims. {Or be exiled from the land} means they are not to be spoken to or associated with, and they exit the boundary of faith into the boundary of disbelief and denial.
{That is a disgrace for them in this world} due to their ill-treatment of the believers, {and for them in the hereafter is a great punishment}: these are the narrow physical forms (al-hayakil) in which they undergo terror and slaughter in every time and age.
(95) And by the chain of transmission from al-Mufaddal, peace be upon him, that he said: "Beware of the arguments of the mockers and doubters, and do not sit with them lest they tempt you, for the one who argues is in the Fire. Remove those who dispute with you regarding your religion—from among those who claim to be part of your group—from your midst. Do not let them approach your mosques or your gatherings. Single out the friends among you with salutation and welcome, and distance yourselves from those who seek worldly gain and those who broadcast the secret of God, for they desire only ostentation and reputation. The one who mocks the believers in the abode of this world mocks himself in the Fire, just as he used to do to the believers in the abode of this world."
(96) It is narrated from our Master al-Sadiq, Mighty is His Might, that he said: "No brotherhood is valid until fatherhood is established. Every brotherhood is severed except for the brotherhood of faith, for it is a firm bond and a connection that does not break. You inherit from him and he inherits from you; you bequeath to him and he to you. You comfort him and treat him as an equal. When you surpass him, you bring him forward; and when you gain anything, you share it with him. You maintain his house, seek his preference, strive for his happiness, and overlook his faults. If he is absent, you represent him; if he is present, you honor him; if he speaks, you believe him; and if he is quiet, you respect him."
