We have said that the Meaning is not partitioned, rooted, or divided; He is an Indivisible Substance. If He—the Exalted—possessed a body, then that body in which He appeared would have a producer and a manifester who manifested it; likewise the soul would have one who produced it. Would the Meaning—the Exalted—then have a producer who produced Him? Exalted is God, Lord of the worlds. Rather, He appeared as He willed, to whom He willed, as He willed—as those I encountered among the Masters and Sheikhs have said.
I encountered the majestic Sheikh Abu al-Husayn al-Jali—may God be pleased with him—who is the exemplar for us after his Sheikh. I heard nothing from him except what I mention to you, and it is my religion: Indeed the Meaning—exalted be His name—appeared as He willed when He knew they were in need of the Manifestation, so that form might draw near to form. Had He appeared in His Supreme Divinity (Lahutiyyat-hi), that would not have been wisdom or justice. Wisdom and justice are only that He appears to us through "homogenization" (tajnisan), for we are perceivers (mudrakun), while He—the Exalted—is neither perceived nor described. Whoever says that God the Almighty is a soul and a body has likened Him to His creation who possess souls and bodies. Rather we say: no two are equal in looking toward Him; for the Name sees Him through that which the Gate does not see, because he [the Gate] is below him in status; the Gate sees Him through that which the Great Orphan does not see; and likewise al-Miqdad sees Him through that which Abu Dharr does not see; and so on until the end of the High World. Majestic is our Lord above attributes and above the speech of the people of disbelief and misguidance.
Rather, I say as my sheikhs said: His outward is Imamate and Successorship, and His inward is an Unseen that cannot be perceived, for He—the Exalted—is not perceived by an attribute nor by any thing.
