He informed him of the news of the poor man and what he had done for him. He said: "Indeed we belong to God and indeed to Him we return. By God, this is the Goshawk (al-baz al-ashhab) whom we were seeking." The man repented of his coldness and returned to what he had been upon, increasing in his connection to the brothers and his kindness toward them.
So beware, my son, with all caution; beware of renouncing the believers. Be humble toward them and use gentle speech, for by God, I have advised you as they advised me, and that is a duty upon you. Beware of backbiting them, for the Prophet—exalted be his glory—said: "Backbiting voids the ritual ablution and breaks the fast of the one fasting."
(634) It was related from him—exalted be his glory—that he was sitting with Umm Salama and Aisha. Aisha signaled with her eye a gesture of backbiting toward Umm Salama, meaning that she was short. The Prophet said to her: "Spit out." She spat out blood, and it was said: she threw up a piece of meat. She asked: "What is this?" He replied: "The flesh of Umm Salama. Have you not heard the words of God the Almighty: {O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear God; indeed, God is Accepting of repentance and Merciful}1."
Be for your brother an eye, a hearing, and a tongue. For your brother is your religion, so do with your religion what you wish. Likewise, your Father who favored you with Recognition: lower your voice for him when addressing him, consult him in your affairs, listen to him, and obey him in what he sees fit for you. Do not oppose him in anything of the matter of your religion or your world, because you have accepted him for your religion and your salvation; so be sincere in your affection for him. Love whoever loves him, and hate whoever hates him; connect with whoever connects with him. Indeed, that is a duty upon you as he advised you. Free your neck; so be refined and be religious, for the refinement of religion precedes religion itself.
