Abu al-Hasan al-Jisri said: My Lord Abu Abd Allah al-Khasibi—may God brighten his face—said: "Ishaq said in the Hashemite Cycle, while he was Uthman, the speech of the people of the Fire in the Fire in a non-Arabic tongue."

(632) My sheikh Abu al-Fath Muhammad ibn al-Hasan narrated to me, saying: Abu Ishaq Ibrahim al-Rifa’i narrated to me, saying: al-Ma’barani narrated to me, saying: There was in a village among the villages of Baghdad a believing man among the people of the world who prepared a banquet and gathered at his place a group of both affirming and opposing folk. He went out to the door of the house for a need, and a believing man of poverty and destitution stopped by him, offered peace, and said to him: "I am a believing man among your brothers in a state of hunger." He replied: "May God provide for you."

Upon the man's departure, the host reflected within himself and said: "Does a man stop before me and say, 'I am among your brothers in hunger,' and I say to him: 'May God provide for you'? By God, I shall not meet any good this day." He hurried after the poor man and caught up with him in a secluded spot by a watering place on the Tigris; the poor man was at the bottom of a hole, digging out clay and eating it, saying to himself: "I told you not to ask him, but you overcame me and asked him, so you attained no good from him; you sinned regarding him and he sinned when he turned you away." When the host looked at his brother, he jumped to his feet and said: "O my brother, I committed an error and I ask you for your forgiveness and that you walk with me to my house."

He replied: "You are absolved, and I shall walk with you to your house. As for eating of your food, no; for I swore by my Master when I left you that I would not eat the food of anyone this day, and I must fulfill my oath." The host said: "What benefit is your walking with me if you do not eat of my food?" He left him and departed, continuing his banquet. When night fell, a quarrel occurred in his house and a man among those with him was killed.
