from the Lord Messenger—exalted be his glory—that he said: "The most intensely regretful of people on the Day of Resurrection is a scholar who knew a science but did not act upon it; he delivered it to his student who then acted upon it. On the Day of Resurrection, he looks at his student passing by his deed to Paradise while he passes by his deed to the Fire."
(612) It was related: that there was a man among the Children of Israel who had filled a house with science. God revealed to him through the tongue of the Prophet of God Moses—exalted be his glory—: "Say to this man: He has hidden the science and not acted upon it; if he does not draw near to Me with any part of it, I shall never accept him."
It was related: regarding one of the scholars that he was seen at his death looking at his hand and weeping. Some of his students said to him: "O my lord, we see you looking at your hand and weeping?" He replied: "I wish that it had been cut off and I had not written what I wrote and not acted upon it, for it has become a proof against me."
(613) Our Master al-Sadiq—exalted be his glory—said: "Learn science and join to it tranquility and forbearance; do not be among the tyrants of the scholars, lest your ignorance fulfill1 [your ruin] upon you. Be humble to those from whom you learn, so that those who learn from you may be humble to you."
(614) Amir Almuminin—exalted be his glory—said in a testament to Kumayl ibn Ziyad: "O Kumayl: Science is better than wealth; Science guards you while you guard wealth. O Kumayl: Wealth is diminished by spending, while Science grows through spending. O Kumayl: Science is the judge and wealth is the judged. O Kumayl: Science leads you to Paradise and wealth leads you to the Fire. O Kumayl: When the treasurers of wealth die, their mention is severed, but the treasurers of Science are living, enduring as long as Science endures."
