Forgery in the Quran

My sheikh narrated to me—may God be pleased with him—saying: It was related that al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf al-Thaqafi—may God curse him—gathered from all regions the readers who recited the Quran according to those who read it to the Messenger of God, or to Amir Almuminin, or to Abd Allah ibn Mas’ud, or to others among the companions. He took all the Mushafs they had and burned them, killed the readers, and compiled this Mushaf from the Mushaf of Uthman ibn Affan. Nothing remained in the hands of the people except what was well-known on the tongues, which he was unable to burn or hide.

It has been reported: that the Quran consisted of twelve thousand verses and contained many instances of the words of the Almighty: {May they perish} (tabbat) and mentions of the Houses; but he left nothing except His saying: {May the hands of Abu Lahab perish}1.

It was said: When he reached the words of the Almighty: {Indeed, God chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of Imran over the worlds}2, he said to the scribe: "Write: 'and the family of Marwan.'" Those present with him, among those who aided him in that, said to him: "If you write that, the nation of Muhammad will know that you have changed the Mushaf." So he said to the scribe: "Write: 'and the family of Imran over the worlds.'"

(608) It was related from our Master al-Baqir—exalted be his glory—that he said: "They desired to eliminate the Truth, but God—Mighty and Sublime—prevented them from eliminating it. Indeed, Abd al-Muttalib's name is Imran; he [the Imam] said: 'The family of Muhammad and the family of Imran are one.'"
