From my sheikh — may God be pleased with him — from his grandfather Abu Ishaq al-Rifa’i — may God be pleased with him: "Lord Sheikh Abu Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Hamdan al-Khasibi — may God sanctify his soul — used to say: 'Abd al-Nur is not to be mixed with water.' He only drank it with us pure (sarfan). He never perfumed himself with any scent, musk, or camphor without going to Abd al-Nur, mixing it with rosewater, and blending it therein; then he would perfume himself and perfume us, saying: 'With this is Abd al-Nur mixed, and not with other than it.'"

It was related regarding Abd al-Nur: that the "Light" (al-Nur) is the Name and the "Servant" (al-Abd) is the Gate. Others said: the "Light" is the Gate and the "Servant" is al-Miqdad.

Supplication upon drinking Abd al-Nur

(606) That which the Connaissant supplicates with upon drinking it: "All praise is due to God, the High alone, who fulfilled His covenant, accomplished His promise, aided His servant, and defeated the confederates alone; the refuge of the seekers and the goal of the Connaissants. Unquestionably, for Him is the pure religion; that is because God is the Truth and that which they call upon besides Him is falsehood, and because God is the High, the Great, the Amir Almuminin, the King, the Manifest Truth. O God, pray upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and upon Salsal and the family of Salsal — the lamps of the darknesses and the keys of the words, the testimony of sincerity when there is no escape. O God, indeed this is Your servant, Abd al-Nur, a person whom You honored and preferred, and for Your saints who recognize You, You made lawful; and upon Your enemies the deniers, You made forbidden. O God, provide us through it with security, faith, and health from ailments; remove from us anxiety and grief; make it pure in Your obedience; and grant us success in word and deed in that which pleases You by Your mercy. Begin with our believing brothers in the easts and wests of the earth; unite our word and their word upon Your Oneness, and do not separate between us and them; indeed You are the High, the Great, Powerful over what You will, and worthy of answering."
